How long does China–Europe rail freight take? Transit times by route

In short

On selected China–Europe connections, 14–16 days terminal to terminal is a realistic benchmark, on individual routes such as Chengdu–Małaszewicze also 12–14 days. Pre- and on-carriage come on top. The next usable departure and the European connection also decide the arrival date.

The benchmark: 14–16 days

For many standard connections between Chinese terminals and European gateways, transit is 14–16 days terminal to terminal. That is not a blanket value for all products: route, direction, service variant and corridor determine the quoted value.

Westbound and eastbound differ

Europe → China transit is often longer. Routes such as Duisburg → Xi’an or Hamburg → Wuhan are listed at 20–22 days. Plan return loads with their own time buffer.

What makes up total transit

  • Pre-carriage to the departure terminal in China
  • Waiting time until the next usable departure
  • Main leg including border handling and gauge change
  • Forwarding in the European network, 1–10 days per route from Małaszewicze
  • On-carriage to the consignee

Using the figures correctly

Always compare quotations on the same basis: same route, same scope, same direction. The Route Explorer lists all routes with transit time, service and data status. Estimated values are marked.
