Home appliances
From road to rail
When political and regulatory restrictions stopped road transport, an intermodal rail solution replaced 20 to 30 trucks a day. With a terminal close to the plant, transit time fell to ten days.
Europe
Punkt wyjścia
A leading European manufacturer of home appliances shipped its goods from Europe to Moscow with 20 to 30 trucks every day. Political restrictions and regulatory hurdles made this solution unworkable. Production depended on daily deliveries, so a reliable and economical alternative was needed quickly.
Zadanie
The goal was a solution with a comparable transit time that secured daily supply and kept costs under control. The switch had to happen fast, with guaranteed weekly capacity and the shortest possible lead time.
Rozwiązanie
After a thorough analysis, an intermodal concept with block trains and optimised routing was developed. In the first phase, containers travelled by truck to Budapest and from there by rail to Moscow, in 16 to 18 days as single containers and in 14 days by block train. In the second phase, a rail terminal just five kilometres from the plant was added, with weekly direct services. Transit time fell to ten days, and lead time dropped from 24 hours to a few hours.
Rezultat
The manufacturer kept its production supplied without interruption, even under difficult conditions. Daily updates made every shipment traceable, and handling ran from a single source, from container pick-up to final delivery. Within a few months, the first test shipments grew to 60 to 80 containers per week.
